В цій збірці творів Дені Дідро представлені три романи в українських перекладах Валеріана Підмогильного. Вперше ці переклади були опубліковані в Харкові у 1933 році. Майже всі художні твори Дені Дідро (1713–1784) французького філософа-просвітителя, творця «Енциклопедії», мистецтвознавця і письменника, побачили світ і принесли йому славу лише після смерті. Протягом кількох століть уся Європа відкривала для себе романи Дідро-митця, чий творчий пошук значно випередив свій час, але є актуальним і понині. До видання ввійшли антиклерикальний роман-сповідь «Черниця»; дотепний, перейнятий діалектичною грою розуму роман-діалог «Небіж Рамо» та наповнений життєвою мудрістю та життєлюбством свого героя роман «Жак-фаталіст». На думку Дідро, роман повинен змальовувати навколишній світ, показувати живі характери та зображувати картину звичаїв своєї доби в правдивих деталях, щоб читач змушений був сказати: «Слово честі, це правда! Таке не вигадаєш!»

Вопреки распространённому мнению (которое можно найти даже на сайте журнала), «Огонёк» выходит не с 1 апреля 1923 и даже не с декабря 1899, а с 1879 года. Но, просуществовав всего четыре года, журнал впервые был закрыт во время реформ в 1883 году, возобновлён в 1899 как приложение к «Биржевым ведомостям». В царское время почти всё место в журнале занимали художественные рассказы и фотографии. Повторно закрыт в 1918 году как антисоветское издание, выпуск возобновлён по инициативе М. Кольцова в 1923 году. До 1940 года — выходило 36 номеров в год, с 1940 года — еженедельник. В 1925-1991 выходили художественные и публицистические брошюры в серии "Библиотека "Огонек". В советское время журнал выпускался издательством «Правда», в котором, как приложение к журналу с 1946 года, также выходила «Библиотека „Огонька“» — собрания сочинений отечественных и зарубежных классиков. В 1990 году учредителем журнала, ранее принадлежавшего издательству ЦК КПСС «Правда», стал трудовой коллектив «Огонька» во главе с Владимиром Вигилянским (председатель совета трудового коллектива) и Виталием Коротичем. В последующие годы журнал был акционирован и неоднократно менял владельцев. В 1999 году входил в крупнейшую «медиа-группу Березовского». 11 марта 2009 года «Огонёк» куплен издательским домом «Коммерсантъ». С этого момента новое издательство начинает возрождать «Огонёк». С 14 сентября журнал начинает издаваться в своём классическом «увеличенном» формате.
