О том, что «Мерримак» (переименованный вообще-то в «Вирджинию») и «Монитор» произвели революцию в военном деле знают даже в детских садиках. Все-таки напомним: полдела, что «Монитор» являлся бронированным кораблем, все дело в том, что на бронированный корабль установили впервые в истории башню с артиллерийскими орудиями, а башня могла вращаться в секторе 360 градусов. Первое сражение между броненосцами, известное как «битва при Хэмтон Роадз», произошла 9 марта 1862 г. Итоги боя привели к повальному увлечению строительством мониторов. Президент США Абрахам Линкольн, будучи человеком неизмеримо от флота далеким, тем не менее заявил, что отныне победу в морской войне смогут принести только «мониторы». Самый первый монитор под названием «Монитор» дал имя целому классу хорошо бронированных и отменно вооруженных кораблей.
