“What?” Jack asked curiously.

“Work called,” Riley explained.

“Was it bad news? You look pale.”

“No. Not work.” Why can’t I just say the words? “Dad called too.”

Jack hesitated. “He did?” he finally prompted.

“Dad said it’s done. We’re able to have Max. They need me to go in to sign the rest of the adoption papers on Monday.”

Jack placed a hand over his and squeezed it. “That’s wonderful news.”

“So we’ll have to…I don’t know…Jack?” Riley turned his hand and gripped Jack’s hand tightly. “Oh my god, Max is going to be ours.”

They’d been so careful not to raise their hopes, or even spend too much time with the little boy that had stolen their heart. But now… Max was going to be coming to the Double D? Riley couldn’t think of anything more perfect.

He looked at him and grinned. Against the noise of Lexie waking up with a cry and Logan teasing Hayley, he simply returned the squeeze.

“Now that is what I call a family.”
