Summary
Vadim Vatsuro (1935–2000) had been studying Lermontov’s life and work for over four decades. This book includes almost everything Vadim Vatsuro had written on Lermontov — from his 4th year student paper to his later research of the 1990s, from the articles in the «Lermontov Encyclopedia» and essays reviewing some of his separate poems to larger studies summarizing the body of earlier work on Lermontov and many years of diligent research this outstanding philologist had undertaken. Dr. Vatsuro also examined questions of Lermontov’s textology, biography, history of Lermontov studies and his poetic heritage. Vadim Vatsuro studied Lermontov’s work in a larger historical and literary context, thus the present book is truly not only a study of Lermontov but his epoch. Some of the materials included in this volume were taken from the researcher’s personal archives and are published for the first time.
